Welcome to the Fusion June round up – and what a month!!  There was cake.  There was racing.  There was fun.  Everything else is an optional extra !  Read on to find an update on the Club birthday party, the Scottish Youth Championships hosted by the club as well as a number of race reports and some member charity craziness.

On Saturday 22nd June the club celebrated 10 years of being awesome!   Founded in 2009, our wonderful club started off with just 12 friends who got together 3 times a week to train and compete under the Fusion triathlon Club.  Since then the club has steadily grown to the club we know now.  200+ members and 11 sessions throughout the week for senior and junior members.  We thought that was worth celebrating!

So we got together for a very sociable bash at Hillhead Sports Club. There was music, food, photos through the years to reminisce/chuckle at introductions to some of our wonderful sponsors and affiliates, spot prizes given out by Ace Physio.

A fantastic talk from club legend Ken MacEwen on his charity ride “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”, amazing!  Lovely baking from some of our members, huge thank you to Julie Barnett for our birthday cake, Mirjam Allik for her impressive swim – run cheesecakes, and Jo Patterson for the triathlon themed cupcakes.

The sun shone on us thankfully as the party moved outside to enjoy drinks in the sun and rather competitive games of Hungry Hippo, rounders and space hopper racing.  A great day was had by all, here’s to the next 10 amazing years. We have a wonderful club thanks to all of our amazing members. Thank you.

The sun shone, the kids smiled and there was a great buzz at Bellahouston park for the Scottish National Youth champs run by Fusion. It’s hard to know where to start.

  • Maybe little 8yr old Charlie Lyne who could barely swim a length at Xmas, he rocked the first race of the day winning smiling from ear to ear into the arms of his mum volunteering at the finish. Those lane 1 Sunday coaches are legends Kerry Sloan, Lauryn Turnbull, Jack Nobile.
  • Little Emily Langdon getting her confidence in the bike and smiling as she smashed her way round.
  • High 5’s from the cox girls
  • The mowat boys determination.
  • Myles Macauley who kept smiling the whole race.
  • Melissa Turnbull pushing and pushing to get round after a hard few months.
  • Fergus Currie like a miniature Pro athlete.
  • Alex Robin scraping himself straight off the deck after a nasty bike crash and working through the field to finish an amazing second.
  • Baby Giraffe Isabelle Burnside tolling the dice with the ride of the day to get off the front then holding on to a podium slot.
  • The kids who waited at the finish line to congratulate their pals and others.

Every single kid was amazing today.

But the standout?????? The volunteers who made it happen. 500+ volunteer hours today alone. There are people who have given 20+ hrs to the club for free this weekend. It’s that selfless devotion to help others that makes fusion what it is. For a first time race director Steve Calveley stood up and knocked it out the park. We only just made the required numbers of helpers this year. Please please consider helping next time. Every single volunteer today had a smile and went home knowing they made a difference to others. It’s a great feeling. The club (and every kid) is extremely grateful.

Here’s to the next 10 years.

We have a number of fabulous articles for you this month posted on the club website – if you have anything you’d like to write about (could be a race report, a ride report, a training blog – anything club triathlon related really) then get in touch and we’ll get it on the site for everyone to be inspired over – info@fusiontriathlonclub.com

Fusion Rides – a new series of articles exploring familiar / favorite ride routes by members.   First in the series is a 70k commuting route from Paul Anderson from Lenzie to Edinburgh city centre taking in the wilds of South Lanarkshire, the Bathgate Alps and the urban sprawl of Edinburgh.

Race report – Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau Natalie Stevenson talks us through the highs and lows of an Ironman event in Southern Germany.  Get some bratwurst and a bier or two ready for this one !!

Race report – ITU World Multisport Championships Pontevedra 2019 Steve Ellison represents GB in this Duathlon in sunny Spain.  Beware.  Nice beach photo included.

Race report – St Mary’s Loch standard 2019Yann Robin writes about his St Mary’s Loch standard race – well done Yann !! Looks like a great race !

We have two fusion members, a former junior and a senior, both completing a charity swim of Loch Lomond.

Sally Nisbet is a shining example of why the club junior section is so successful and what we produce – we are people driven, not results driven.  She was a junior member for years, at 17 years old she’s decided to swim Loch Lomond for charity.  Yes that’s not just run in, scream, run out – but swimming the full 22 miles of it !  Read her amazing page here and you’ll understand what a fine cause and an amazing young lady she is.  Please give if you can.

Fergus on the other hand, is slightly older, should have more common sense… but is swimming the length of Loch Lomond for charity too.  Fergus is a veteran of sensible weekend pursuits like the Red Bull Neptune’s steps so we are considering adding some excitement to his swim by placing some inflatables around 21.5 miles in.  Please give if you can.

Well done to Isla Britton who recently placed at the Canadian championships recenty.  Here she is in her own words.

“So pleased to come 3rd junior (16-19) at Canadian champs this weekend. And 15th over all in my first elite CAMTRI continental cup race racing against pros and seniors and I was the only 2003 to make the A final. However in the swim someone hit me hard in the head and ribs 😂 so I had a terrible swim but ran myself into 3rd junior position.”

Fusion Balfron Junior Aquathon is now live !!  A super friendly event which also is affiliated to add points to our club for Triathlon Scotland members. Please support your club!  Further details here on entry central

The Fusion Yoga sessions have run for a while early on a Monday morning – 6:30 – 7:30am.  Some initial feedback from members has shown that moving this to an afternoon / evening slot may make it more accessible for a wider group.  We’d like to know more so if you’re interested in taking part in Fusion Yoga sessions please do complete the survey as this will guide when the next block of Yoga (staring mid Aug) will be run.

Don’t forget is you’re interested in improving your cycling abilities then consider coming along to the Monday night track sessions at Bellahousten Park.  We use the 400m cycling track so unless you turn right when you should turn left you’ll never be left behind !!  Sign up here
