Claire Coey-Niebel - Fusion member since 2013
Got into Triathlon: I started with fusion in winter 2013 to get some structured run training as I’d entered Edinburgh half marathon for that summer. I attended the Tuesday evening run session and that is the one session that has pretty much been my staple session all these years. The session worked too, I PB’d that half marathon at 1 hr 37 which I was delighted with, little did I know a few years later and a lot of fusion sessions later it would come down to 1hr 25 at Alloa half 2017.
I have attended all of the fusion sessions in the past but currently my regular sessions are a Monday night swim, Tuesday morning swim and Tuesday night run as I do a lot more on my own to be make my training as time efficient with life as possible. After realising the benefits of structured training, the excellent coaching and supportive atmosphere at fusion I quite quickly got hooked on the whole triathlon thing. So, little more than a year later I was stood on the start line for my first GB age group qualification race in Southport June 2014. I can’t remember what you needed to automatically qualify (possibly a top 4 finish in your age group) but I was second overall in that race which I was over the moon with and meant I had qualified for European Champs in Geneva 2015………and that was the start of my age group racing.
GB age group racing was a great experience; I got to sample international racing in cool places such as Geneva, Lisbon, Austria and Denmark but my highlight has to be World Champs in Chicago 2015, I made a big holiday out of it with family and went to the mens US tennis open final in NYC beforehand. Middle Distance Europeans Champs in Walchsee Austria was also high up there as it’s a part of the world I would probably never been to otherwise and the scenery was jaw droppingly stunning.
However there is more to triathlon and to fusion than GB age group racing, whatever your goals or aspirations fusion can be part of that. Whether that is completing your first triathlon over sprint distance at a local event (which are often the best btw and do the best cakes!) or competing in your first or tenth Ironman, you will find like minded people and training buddies to help you along your way. I have found friends for life (and a husband) at fusion.
