Bute was my first tri since Bishopbriggs 2016 and my second ever so I was a bit nervous beforehand. Still, it was a nice day for a trip on the boat and there was a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Got out the pool in just under 18 mins, decent enough for me and I felt pretty Good! Then came 10k into a hellish headwind which really hurt. After taking 22 mins to turn at 10k I managed to up the pace with the wind on my back and got back to T2 after 38:43 on the bike. Onto the run and 3 laps seemed a tall order at first but I managed to enjoy it and clock 21:48 for a total of 1:20.47. Plenty of positives and quicker than my previous effort so job done.

As one of my favourite events from last year, I was determined to sign-up for the Bute Triathlon in 2017 – but this time the Sprint Distance!
There was an amazing turn-out from Fusion Triathlon Club, lots of super friendly competitors from other clubs, bags of enthusiasm from everyone, encouragement and overall good camaraderie! Bute Wheelers should be commended for organising such a wonderfully amazing event! The pool swim started well, with everyone being very respectful and allowing overtaking. I settled into a decent rhythm and managed to get a PB from my 750m! Onto the bike, and having done the novice last year I knew it started with a hill, so I just chipped away at it. A beautiful bike course, somewhat undulating with a headwind out and a tailwind back (thankfully!). Then onto the run which consisted of a varied terrain, but largely enjoyable 3-lap loop. It took about 1.5km for my legs to want to go, but realising that I might manage to finish in under 1:25 on my last lap I put in a concerted effort to aim for a wee PB!
I don’t think anyone was more surprised than me that I managed to come 3rd in the Senior age group category ?
Overall I was absolutely ecstatic to go home having met some lovely people, seen some amazing performances from Fusion and other athletes alike and achieved a podium place for myself all on a beautifully sunny day on the stunning Isle of Bute! I would strongly recommend this race to anyone – I will be back next year!!!
